Braving the Blogosphere

Hello and welcome all to the Crooked Spindle,

I've been aspiring to write a blog for some time now, mainly in an effort to record my adventures and achievements in spinning, dyeing, knitting, crochet and crafting in general and to share this with anyone who cares to come and look.

There are so many of you out there who frequently inspire me with your blogging, in sharing and showcasing your work and technique you take the fear factor out of testing the water and prepare the ground for new comers to sow their own seeds of creativity.

If I could get even half way to writing a few pieces of equal interest, I will be a happy blogger!

So today between nappies and playtime and feeding the smallies in my life this morning I snatched some time to dye some fibre.

I'd already dyed some wool locks (a mix of wensleydale, coloured and white teeswater) and some trilobal nylon with green yellow and blue food colouring and although I hadn't used any red, this stunning purple came out - hmmm...

I can't quite figure this out but I deduced that this happy accident had occured where the blue and green had come into contact with each other and sure enough, when I dyed my merino and nylon with blue and green food colouring today, hooray!! I got fibre dyed with my favourite colours, blues, greens and purple! Peacock proud I am of my peacock painted fibre. Can't wait to spin something snazzy with it!!

I'm envisaging a rather funky (if unseasonable) scarf. Mmmm... luscious! Maybe something else. We'll see where the mood takes me at the time!

Isn't that just the joy of it though? I rarely know what something will be before I make it. Inspiration generally strikes me during the process and frequently shifts and changes from start to finish. I find my creativity flows most freely when I remove the ties of creating specifically for something. It enables me to let go of the process a bit more and allow the materials to be what they want to be instead of trying to conform them to what I see in my minds eye.

Well that's my first venture onto the blog board for now. I hope you'll enjoy seeing what I do. I'll be linking to other blogs and tutorials throughout as well so I hope you'll always find something of interest in the cauldron at The Crooked Spindle!
